About Megan Mullally
Mullally is one of Hollywood’s most versatile talents. An actress and singer, she has appeared on Broadway, in concert halls, on the big screen, and on day-time, primetime and cable television.
She can currently be seen as Chief on Rob Corddry’s new Adult Swim comedy series “Children’s Hospital.” She created the role of Lydia for the 2010 season of the critically-acclaimed Starz cable series “Party Down,” and this fall she reprises the role of Tammy Swanson opposite husband Nick Offerman on NBC’s “Parks And Recreation.”
Other recent credits include the 2009 remake of Fame and rave reviews as Beverly in the Odyssey Theatre’s West Coast debut of Adam Bock’s “The Receptionist,” for which she also won the 2010 Backstage West Garland Award for Best Performance in a Play.
Mullally made her Broadway debut in the 1994 revival of “Grease.” She also starred in the hit Broadway musical “Young Frankenstein.”
Los Angeles theater credits include “The Berlin Circle” at The Evidence Room Theater, for which she won the 2000 Backstage West Garland Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play, and the L.A. Weekly Award for Best Leading Female Performance.
On the big screen, she starred in the film “Everything Put Together,” directed by Marc Forster, an entry in the 2000 Sundance Film Festival’s main competition. Other film credits include “Anywhere But Here,” “Stealing Harvard” and “Speaking Of Sex.”
Mullally is also a talented singer, recording albums and performing with her band Supreme Music Program. SMP recently made its international debut in the West End, performing at the Vaudeville Theater in London for eight performances in February 2010. In the U.S., concert appearances for SMP include The Allen Room at Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, The Seattle Symphony, Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, SUNY Buffalo’s Center for the Arts and The Orange County Performing Arts Center. She has made three CDs with Supreme Music Program: “The Sweetheart Break-In,” “Big As A Berry” and “Free Again!” As a soloist, Mullally has appeared at the Disney Concert Hall, sang “You Took Advantage Of Me” on the new “Fame” soundtrack, and sang “Long John Blues” for the film “Burlesque.”
Supreme Music Program performs songs from almost every genre, including jazz, blues, pop, country, rock, classical, roots and traditional. Focusing primarily on story-songs from a variety of eras, the band’s style is quirky and compelling, purposefully introducing a new mood with each carefully hand-picked song. In many ways an ode to song-writing itself, each song is given its own unique treatment, resulting in an evening of musical surprises – a little something for everyone, and a treat in particular for connoisseurs of great song-writing.

Megan Mullally (not Karen) in the house

Special to The Examiner
Around the same the time Megan Mullally was settling into her breakout role as Karen Walker on “Will & Grace,” she also was building a band called the Supreme Music Program. The fruits of those labors will be on display at five performances in The City this weekend.
The Oklahoma City native serves as the band’s de facto artistic director, and though she didn’t write the show’s songs, she says they represent a close expression of who she is as an artist.
It’s not cabaret.

“I talk some between songs and there are some laughs, but it’s all very off-the-cuff,” Mullally says. “I don’t have set patter. It’s not a glitzy show. I don’t wear a spangly dress or anything. It’s just about music and storytelling.”
Her musical curation includes Randy Newman, Tom Waits and “a band called The Decemberists who I really like,” she says. “We do a very deconstructed version of ‘Ave Maria,’ so we throw Schubert into that, or Schumann … I get confused. It changes from show to show.”
In addition to Mullally, the band includes musicians Joe Berardi, Piotr Jandula, Greg Kuehn, Doug Livingston, Stuart Mathis and Larry Williams. They have recorded three CDs to date and a fourth is on the way.
So while there will be lots of different kinds of music, what there won’t be is an evening with Karen Walker.
“I try to disabuse people of that notion,” Mullally says, almost awkwardly. “Karen will not be appearing.”
It’s no surprise fans hope for a reunion with the beloved character. Mullally racked up four consecutive Golden Globe nominations, seven consecutive Screen Actors Guild nominations and seven consecutive Emmy nominations with wins for the first and last.
She’s not actively trying to distance herself from the role and admits missing the character.
“After that length of time and having such a great character, you kind of feel like it’s a friend of yours,” she says.
She was even considering a “Karen: The Musical” project with Casey Nicholaw and Jeff Marx of “Book of Mormon,” though the rights to the character were withdrawn by the “Will & Grace” producers.
“Sometimes people do come expecting Karen sitting on a pink pouf, drinking martinis. At first, I think, they’re bitterly disappointed,” Mullally says, “but usually by the end they’re very affected by what it is that we actually do. Ultimately it’s about the music and the musicianship.”
